The Education Specialist provides individualized educational programming and support for youth in a residential group setting. The Education Specialist works with home school district personnel to meet the individualized educational needs of youth in care.


Essential functions of this job include, but are not limited to:


  • Demonstrates strong classroom/learning environment and management skills using boundaries and rules to promote students’ self-management and responsibility.
  • Adept at behavior management recognizing the need for prevention, intervention and problem-solving techniques; recognizes and addresses aggressive student behavior and is trained and proficient in behavior management and Therapeutic Crisis Intervention techniques, including the use of physical intervention (holds).
  • Serves as an adult role model for students and colleagues in all behaviors including communication, hygiene, and appearance, management of self, response to stress / challenges and in the demonstration of professional relationships with others.
  • Demonstrates a capability for engaging youth/families in trust-based, productive relationships in order to help youth/families prepare for transitions, interact in the community, and promote respect and independence.
  • Demonstrates an awareness and sensitivity to cultural and social variations, and shows respect for individual differences.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to quality through the effective use of resources including and not limited to time, materials, technology and personnel.
  • Demonstrates a baseline understanding and knowledge of NYS learning standards and core curriculum and content.

Requirements:  Bachelor’s degree in Education, NYS Teacher Certification, CPR/Red Cross Lifesaving Certification and 1 year of prior teaching experience or student teaching/internship experience. Master’s Degree and 1-3 years of Special Education and/or JJS experience is preferred but not required. Candidates should have a valid driver’s license and meet agency driving standards.

Certification required- Special Education preferred K-12
